GlobalPlatform Launches Card ID Configuration for the Identity Market

The GlobalPlatform Card ID Configuration provides government issuing authorities with a definitive guide on how to implement interoperable chip-based identity solutions in accordance with GlobalPlatform Card Specification v2.2. The document – which has been developed in alignment with global standards, government security mandates and in support of the advanced encryption standard (AES) – enables project coordinators to gain access to the relevant technical information, in a simple and user-friendly format.

With more security mandates being issued for the implementation of various government e-identity documents and e-services (e-passports, e-driving licenses and digital signature for example), more government issuers are moving towards deploying these applications on one multi-application card. Because of this there is a growing need for one standardized infrastructure. This latest configuration from GlobalPlatform will therefore act as the central configuration specification to assist new issuers in deploying up-to-date smart card technology and be a reference point for existing issuers looking to migrate to the latest GlobalPlatform Specifications. Adhering to this specification will also enable issuing authorities to be ready to support services from vertical sectors.

Gil Bernabeu, Technical Director of GlobalPlatform, comments: “The launch of this market driven initiative will enable governments to develop an interoperable e-identity infrastructure using off-the-shelf card and issuance solutions able to support various government services. This card configuration also supports the development of public and private sector partnerships to deliver innovative services such as payment and transport.

“As a next step, GlobalPlatform plans to extend its compliance program to validate that products and solutions used in e-identity projects comply with the functionality outlined in the Card ID Configuration. Once completed, this will be an invaluable resource for governments deploying and managing identity documents.”
